Adopt-A-Street

The Adopt-A-Street Program is a partnership between the City of Smithville and its residents, organizations, and merchants. This program allows individuals, families, civic groups, or businesses to adopt a section of street in Smithville. The adopting individual or group will take responsibility for collecting litter in the City of Smithville right-of-way for the duration of the adoption period. In return, the City will recognize individuals and groups by listing their names on the City’s website and providing signage on their adopted street.

The Adopt-A-Street Program helps cultivate cleaner, more delightful surroundings for anyone who lives, visits, or simply drives by adopted areas. This program encourages civic engagement and strengthens community ties as we team up to keep Smithville clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is there a time commitment?

A: Yes! Volunteers are required to adopt a street for a period of two (2) years. Litter is collected by the individual or group at least three times per year (for a minimum of six (6) times per adoption period). Litter should be collected in the Spring before Memorial Day, in Summer before Labor Day, and in the Fall before Thanksgiving.

Q: Is there an age limit for participants?

A: Participants must be at least 6 years old.

Q: Do I need to bring my own supplies?

A: No! Individuals and groups will be provided safety equipment and trash bags by the City of Smithville. A City employee will deliver the supplies to you and collect them after your pick-up day. Please contact the Adopt-A-Street Administrator two-weeks before your scheduled cleanup to reserve your supplies and set up the delivery time/date. Individuals and groups are required to provide their own transportation to and from the clean-up site.

Q: What do I do with the trash I collect?

A: Once you collect the trash, the City takes it from there! You simply securely close the bags, group the bags together, and place them at the curb about 4 feet from the edge of the roadway. Notify the Adopt-A-Street Administrator that trash bags need to be collected and provide the following information: 1) Location of bags (street, intersection, side of the street, etc.) 2) Number of bags to be collected 3) Date of cleanup.
